Even though the phrase “sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite” may be used lightly before bedtime, the fact is that bed bugs are a real nighttime menace that often cannot be detected until the human host begins to be bitten. At one point in the early 1940’s, these parasites were nearly eradicated. However since 1995, the presence of bed bugs in Nigeria has surged due to unknown reasons. Although the easiest sign of bed bugs is to be bitten, it is certainly the most painful and inconvenient method. Preventive measures can be taken early to ensure your house is eradicated of these unpleasant creatures.
Typical Signs of Bed Bugs & Where to Find Them

The name "bed bug" is misleading. While these parasites are certainly found in beds, they are certainly not limited to this area. Bed bugs are drawn to dark locations and can be found in dark crevices, with eggs being found by the hundreds in fabric seams. These characteristics can are found in places including luggage, dressers, vehicles, bedside clutter, and even electrical sockets. Aside from including dark locations, what else do all these sites have in common? All are in close proximity to the human host. After feeding on its host, bed bugs will commonly retreat to these locations, not far from their next meal.

Physical Signs of Bed Bugs

What makes bed bugs signs hard to detect is that they are nocturnal creatures (with peak activity occurring from 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.). Although bites may be the most noticeable sign of an infestation, other symptoms may include:

Fecal spots (small, dark, sand like droppings that appear around and especially beneath nests)
Blood smears on sheets (either from the human host or the bed bugs themselves if they are crushed while feeding). Sometimes re-wetted or fresh fecal matter can smear like fresh blood.
The presence of empty, molted exoskeletons (don’t confuse the exoskeleton for the actual bed bug, it is still alive!)
The unique characteristic smell of rotting raspberries

How do I Tell Apart a Bed Bug Bite from Other Insect Bites?

Unfortunately, bed bugs are not the only creatures that live in your home. Being able to differentiate the kind of bite you have can help determine the right treatment for yourself and your home. In general, the bed bugs signs of bites are:

Red, often with a darker red spot in the middle
Arranged in a rough line or in a cluster
Located on the neck, face, arms, and hands
People may have different reactions to bites and bed bug symptoms. Some may not experience any reaction while others may experience an allergic reaction that can include severe itching, blisters or hives.

By knowing what signs of bed bugs to look for, early detection of bed bugs can ensure that you can rid your home of this pestilence. Sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite!
